A quick round up of mine and Ange’s trip to Loch Ken, nice break from the kids for a weekend and a chance to chill out and get out in the canoe for a while.
Friday: Ange dropped kids off with Grandparents while I finished getting the car packed up, ready to go at 11ish and hit the road. Got across to Loch Ken, teepee pitched and out on the water by about 4pm for a spot of fishing before BBQ for tea. Ange managing to get snagged with record breaking predictability, and typically the first (and only) one to catch a fish! Glorious weather with only a slight breeze made for some lovely canoeing, didn’t go too far though just up in to the River Dee opposite the campsite. Water level was much higher than last year and we got right up to the first bit of moving water before heading back down. Don’t think you’d get far beyond there in a canoe though, fairly shallow. Tried out the Omnia Stove Oven with a Bannock mix we’d brought, was lovely! Pan worked really well and made for a very tasty afternoon snack. Followed closely by BBQ tea on the firepit before throwing some sticks on to have a ‘wee fire’ to keep us warm after the sun started setting. Temperature dropping like mad with the clear skies we retreated to bed for a very comfy night (if a little cold for Ange).
Saturday: Woke around 7-8am as the tent started cooking us with the sun well in the sky by then. Simple breakie of cereal before washing the dishes from the BBQ and Ange making some fresh bread (plenty of bun in oven / Ange’s buns jokes!). Enjoyed warm bread with some ham and cheese for lunch before having a drive down to Castle Douglas for a wander. Back at the campsite and we went out for a trip down the loch to a small pebble beach near Parton. Pulled the canoe out and sat in the sun relaxing eating Pringles for a while, heading back down with the breeze doing a spot of fishing. Dropped Ange off at the campsite and went up the River Dee to fish again (still didn’t catch anything!) and had a little play in the moving water dodging the rocks quite nicely!! Another fantastic day of sun and very little wind. Tea was a true ‘Glamping Special’ of toad in the hole Omnia Oven style with potatoes from the allotment and peas/sweetcorn thrown in for good measure. Loving this oven!!!! Evening paddle on the glass-like Loch, loads of rises from the fish but still nothing more caught.. Unbelievable! Watched an awesome sunset from the best place in the world though, on a canoe in a perfectly still Loch. It was so quiet and peaceful, paddled back to camp extra careful to maintain the silence. Another chilly night but not as bad as Friday.
Sunday: Baking hot in the teepee again in the morning! Gotta love summer. Fry up sarnies for breakfast and packing things up as we go. All done and ready to head off, went for a walk along the Loch edge and back, then on the road. Back for 2ish with a short stop half way to eat some of the left over bread and bannock. Cracking weekend away, and a must to get back across later in the year!
